Milton Keynes World Lung Day Charity Event

Let’s start with a number that should stop you in your tracks.

Every year, around 11,000 people in the UK die from lung diseases linked to past exposure at work. That is not a typo. Eleven thousand people. Every single year. This is exactly why Dustcontrol UK created BREATHE., our World Lung Day charity event in Milton Keynes.

Sadly, most of those deaths happen to people who spent their working lives in industries like ours: construction, manufacturing, engineering. Day after day, they breathed in dust, fumes, and airborne particles. Slowly, silently, and irreversibly, this destroyed their lungs (Source: HSE).

The Cost of Staying Silent

The cruellest part is this: these illnesses rarely develop overnight. Instead, they reflect long-term harm. Substances such as dust, fumes, asbestos, and other hazardous airborne materials cause this harm. It builds for years, sometimes decades, before a diagnosis arrives. By then, for too many people, it is already too late.

That is why, on 25 September 2026, World Lung Day, Dustcontrol UK is doing something about it.

Introducing BREATHE.

BREATHE. is our World Lung Day charity event, taking place at Willen Lake, Milton Keynes. We are bringing together people from across the construction and manufacturing industries for a morning of community, challenge, and conversation. Together, we are raising funds for Asthma + Lung UK and raising awareness of an issue that has gone under the radar for far too long.

We will be honest with you. This is not your average corporate charity walk. We have wheelbarrows. We have a lung sculpture built from reclaimed construction materials. Also COPD simulation suits too. Above all, we have an industry that is finally showing up for itself.

Why construction? Why now?

Construction workers face a high risk of developing lung diseases. Many common construction tasks create high dust levels. These tasks include cutting paving blocks, kerbs, flags and roof tiles, as well as grinding, sweeping, cutting and sanding wood. Regularly breathing in construction dust can cause diseases like lung cancer, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and silicosis (Source: Acorn Analytical Services / HSE).

Construction work also brings risks from asbestos-related diseases, COPD, asthma and lung cancer (Source: HSE — Lung disease: higher-risk jobs and industries).

These are not abstract risks. Instead, they are the daily reality for millions of workers across the UK. And yet, despite the technology existing to dramatically reduce exposure, a gap remains between what we know and what actually happens on site. In many cases, this gap is enormous.

Dustcontrol UK spent decades building the equipment that closes that gap. Our dust extraction systems, LEV units, and air filtration protect the people who build, grind, cut, and sand for a living. BREATHE. gives us the chance to say this publicly, loudly, and with the whole industry watching: this matters to us.

What happens on the day

Four connected activities shape the BREATHE. event on 25 September 2026. We designed each one to be inclusive, fun, and genuinely powerful.

First, the charity relay walk takes participants around Willen Lake on one of two route options. Option A offers a 1.3-mile loop around the south lake. It is flat, accessible, and open to every fitness level. Option B steps things up with a full 2.6-mile challenge, taking in both the south and north lakes, with fitness station challenges along the route. Both options finish in exactly the same place, at exactly the same moment: the lung sculpture unveiling. Nobody gets left behind.

Second, the sponsored wheelbarrow relay challenge does exactly what it says. Teams push colleagues in wheelbarrows along a section of the route in full construction gear: hi-vis, hard hats, the lot. It is fun, it is silly, and it puts the construction industry’s identity front and centre at a charity event.

Third, the lung sculpture unveiling forms the centrepiece of the whole day. Our team built a large-scale pair of lungs, approximately 1.5 to 2 metres tall, entirely from reclaimed and donated construction materials: steel pipe, scaffold fittings, wire mesh, and metal offcuts. We used the very materials found on the sites where occupational lung disease silently takes hold. We cannot think of a more powerful way to make the invisible visible.

Finally, Asthma + Lung UK joins us on the day with COPD simulation suits. These give participants a first-hand experience of what it feels like to breathe with a lung condition.

Work causes or worsens these conditions (Source: HSE / ProTrainings). Furthermore, the construction industry holds the highest rates of occupational lung cancer of any sector. Above all, we believe that when people come together around something that matters, things actually change
